Abstract
Introduction: Marital relationship is the most intimate and private human relationship, the durability and quality of which requires knowledge and skill in its consolidation.
Research method: This research aims to investigate the effect of Schwanker’s Encouragement Approach in improving psychological flexibility, cognitive regulation of emotion, and communication patterns of couples in Shiraz City. The experimental research method and semi-experimental research design were pre-test and post-test and follow-up with the control group. First, the pre-test was conducted using research tools on both groups. Then, the therapeutic intervention was carried out on the experimental group, and the post-test was completed by both groups. Three months later, the follow-up test was conducted, and the results of the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up were compared. The statistical population included couples from Shiraz City in the spring of 1400. The statistical sample consisted of 30 people (15 people in the experimental group and 15 people in the control group) who were selected using the available sampling method and randomly assigned to two experimental groups and the control group. The research tools used were the cognitive regulation of emotion questionnaire by Garnevsky and Kraij, the cognitive flexibility questionnaire by Dennis and Vanderwaal, and the couple communication patterns questionnaire by Adilson and Epstein.
Results: The results indicated that couple therapy based on Schwanker's encouragement approach had an impact on the psychological flexibility, emotion regulation, and psychological flexibility of couples in both the post-test and follow-up stages.
Conclusion: Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that Schwanker's encouragement-based approach to couples therapy can enhance the psychological flexibility, cognitive regulation of emotions, and communication patterns of couples.
