Introduction: Important factors that have been highlighted in recent years and which have a significant impact on marital violence are early maladaptive schemes and five-factor traits of personality. The purpose of the present study was to determine the mediator role of the five-factor personality model in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and marital violence.
Method: The research method was descriptive-correlational and the statistical population of the study included all married students of the Varamin Islamic Azad University in the first semester of 2011-2012. The study tool was Revised Conflict Tactics Scale; Schema Questionnaire-short form and Big Five Inventory. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Results: The results of this study showed that the neuroticism personality factor mediates the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and marital violence (B=0.2183, Z= 2.73) at the level of 0.01. The agreeableness personality factor mediates the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and marital violence (B=0.1781, Z=2.51) at the level of 0.05.
Conclusion: According to the findings of this research, early maladaptive schemas can predict personality traits. Neuroticism people experience destructive and unhappy feelings and have unstable emotions. Agreeable people often think of others and emphasize on closeness to others, and in general they are social. Ultimately, these traits lead to the call or no call for violence.
